So I've been playing Ace combat 5 the unsung war and I always hear NCP's always say things like "Blaze Fox two" or "Chopper fox two!" What does that mean, one of my friends told me it's to speed up but is that what it really means?

As I recall it, the slang in air-to-air combat was:

Fox One - Fired a Radar Guided Missile

Fox Two - Fired an Infrared Guided Missile (Heat Seeker)

Fox Three - Fired Guns or Cannons

I could be wrong, though. Sounds like a fun game :)

I believe it goes back to the days of firing Missiles in pairs by
fighters. "Fox 2" was where you fired two because each missile had
about a 30% chance by itself of success.

It came about during Vietnam, but is used by all NATO.

Fox 1 = A Medium range SARH radar guided missile. (Sparrow, Skyflash)

Fox 2 = An IR missile. (Sidewinder)...When the Aim-9M came around (all aspect), they would call out "Fox Two Mike", to specify that it was an all aspect capable missile, and not a tail-chaser like previous Aim-9s.

Fox 3 = Came along later for the Phoenix, now also applied to AMRAAM and MICA...active radar homing.

It has nothing to do with the number of rounds fired.

Guns, Guns, Guns is the call for guns.

By the way, listen to the tapes of AA engagements, you can hear actual pilots use the terminology. The Libyan engagements from the 80s are easy to look-up on YouTube.

Also, in the initial post, the name is the flight or individual aircraft
firing.
And... Important Safety Tip:
Fox 2 is a warning to keep your heads up - a heatseeker has no friends,
once it's launched, and will just as happily home on your airplane as the
Bad Guy's - if you get into its field of view.
