In case anyone wondered how big the radar package on F-4E was and how
it was maintained:

The radome was opened, a bar was inserted into a receptacle in the
airframe above the package and the package would slide out.

Nice pic - but thats a C or D, not an E (no gun fairing). E's APQ-120
was a bit smaller (radome was smaller and oval, to make room for M-61
underneath). Came out the same way, though.

I know, I caught it right after I hit "send." I think it's a D model.

Correction: F-4D, F-4E installation was similar.

Just FYI - No "slide rail extender bar" - a locking chunk
of aluminum weighing about 25 lbs. (the exposed portion of
which was painted AGE yellow) - was required to extend
the radar package on a D-model. The F-4D's APQ-109 had a
built-in telescoping upper support rail, made up of sections
about 18 inches long, one inside the other.

DD - a right-shoulder F-4E 'extender bar carrier' from 1968-1985.

Hey, it's been awhile, my experience was with F-4E. I only saw it
done with a D model once.

Something one never forgets like rolling an engine stand over ones
steel toed boot while installing an engine on an F-4E. Some things one
should be able to forget like slipping on the only ice spot inside a tab
vee.

The incident convinced me of the value of steel toed boots.

I learned to wear steel toes in the Navy. Shortly after I got my first civilian
job, a cast iron manhole cover bounced off the right toe of my trusty old Navy
boondockers. It still hurt, but at least my toes survived. I wore steel toes
for decades after that and was happy to pay whatever they cost. Of course, that
incident also taught me to keep my feet clear of manhole covers. ;-)

If you had been a marine, you would have already known better.
